Service/Procedure Summary

Long-term care is an important option for people who have difficulty performing everyday tasks and whose needs cannot be met through home care. Long-term care is provided at both residential care homes and nursing homes across the province.

People living in nursing homes receive nursing and personal care on a 24-hour basis, including care given under the supervision of a nurse. Other services may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, recreation, and those provided by a social worker and/or dietician.  People may move into nursing homes directly from their homes or from hospital.

The below data shows the wait times for admission into the province’s licensed nursing homes from community and hospital. Transfers between facilities, and emergency admissions are not included in this data.

Wait times are based on completed admissions (rather than predicted wait) and represent the median wait time (the maximum time that half of all people waited). Individual wait times may vary based on a number of factors including care needs and related risk factors, client’s facility choices, and bed availability within preferred facilities.

Data reported prior to August 2023 did not include wait-times for high-priority admissions from community or admissions from hospital.
