Service/Procedure Summary

Long-term care is an important option for people who have difficulty performing everyday tasks and whose needs cannot be met through home care. Long-term care is provided at both residential care homes and nursing homes across the province.

People living in residential care homes receive help with personal care, such as bathing, dressing, and reminders about daily routines, along with supervision and accommodation. Personal care and supervision are provided by Residential Care Workers who are always available on site. People may move into residential care directly from their community or from hospital.

The below data shows the wait times for admission into the province’s licensed residential care homes from community and hospital. Transfers between facilities, and emergency admissions are not included in this data.

Wait times are based on completed admissions (rather than predicted wait) and represent the median wait time (the maximum time that half of all people waited). Individual wait times may vary based on a number of factors including care needs and related risk factors, client’s facility choices, and bed availability within preferred facilities.

Data reported prior to August 2023 did not include wait times for high-priority admissions from community or admissions from hospital.
